The 14 Point "Law School Quotient" Quiz (Continued) |
10)
I don't like people who "game
play". Many would argue that all of law school is a big game. Game playing by the professors is common. You will be sent on wild goose chases, the truth will be withheld from you, etc. Isn’t “the law” a game? 11) I am a creative person. Artistic types oftentimes feel like a coyote in a trap in law school. Much of law school work is mundane and repetitive. While the cases are different, the method of reading and dissecting the cases is the same. If you think of yourself as creative or artistic, you should especially heed the suggestion in this book to sit through a law school class session before committing to attend law school. 12) I want to work outdoors. This one should be obvious. The question itself is designed to get you thinking about the environment in which you want to spend your work days. In law school you will nary see a window, let alone the outdoors. And clearly, lawyers work inside. Is it important for you to be outdoors? If so, how important? 13) I like to "see" the results of my work efforts. Some people are very visual, others are not. When a carpenter leaves the job sight, she can look at the house and "see" the work done that day. For many, visual results give a sense of accomplishment. A carpenter for years and years to come can drive by a home she worked on and relive the effort and pride that went into building the structure. Lawyers, on the other hand, produce only paper. At the end of a long case all a lawyer has is file cases full of documents and hopefully a big check! What rewards do you like to see from your work? 14) I'm not very good at tolerating discomfort for prolonged periods. If you answered this question "true", then there may be trouble in paradise. Law school requires discipline and self-motivation. Law students are constantly performing tasks that all but the hardiest consider to be uncomfortable. Reading cases rather than spending time with one’s family is a sacrifice and disconcerting. In order to get through you must be able to sacrifice today in the hope of a benefit tomorrow. Discomfort will exist in varying degrees for your entire law school education. |
